Have you ever wondered why there are two microphones on Olympus Professional Dictation digital recorders? Advanced technology allows us to utilize directionality to focus on the source of the audio by using two points of reference. These dual microphones work together to identify where the sound is coming from, and treat the audio differently depending on the defined settings.

In Dictation 1, advanced noise cancellation features are deactivated.  This is useful for recording moving subjects, perhaps for reporters or even public safety, or even just a user who likes to place the recorder on the desk and pace while dictating.

In Dictation 2, the advanced noise cancellation system is active.  This technology is able to analyze the phase difference, which identifies the moment the sound carries across each microphone.  Through this technology, the recorder can build a 360 degree map of the audio, and actively suppress any noise not coming directly from the speaker.

In Conference mode, the system activates an Auto-Mic sense, in which the two microphones work together to capture all the noise available and balance the levels of output.  For example, in a conference meeting with a lot of attendees, the speakers closer to the recorder as well as those farther away from the recorder will be at the same volume level in the file playback.  This means that the transcriptionist will be able to be more efficient with the higher quality output of the file.

The different modes on the recorder allow the user to activate the intelligent dual microphones to the most effective setting, based on the current recording situation.
